Association of the German Furniture Industry ("Verband der Deutschen Möbelindustrie" - VDM)

The Association of the German Furniture Industry ("Verband der Deutschen Möbelindustrie" - VDM) is the largest industry association within the Hauptverband der Deutschen Holzindustrie (HDH). The VDM represents German furniture manufacturers indirectly, because its members are the trade bodies of the furniture industry. The main task of the VDM is to protect and represent the economic, political and technical interests of the furniture industry vis-a-vis politicians, trade unions and the public. The Association works at Federal level and also maintains active contact with other European industry associations.

The German furniture industry

The German furniture manufacturers have an annual turnover of around 20 billion euros. Around 102,000 employees work in the 1,007 companies with 20 or more employees. Almost 90 percent of the industry's turnover (17.9 billion euros) is generated by the larger companies with 50 or more employees. The largest division is represented by the manufacturers of kitchen furniture, followed by office and shop furniture, dining, living room and bedroom furniture, upholstered furniture and mattresses.

Around three quarters of sales in the German furniture industry are concentrated in the federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. Other important production locations are Lower Saxony, Hesse and Saxony. Almost one third of the production is exported. France is the most important foreign market, followed by Switzerland, Austria and the Netherlands. The United States, China and Russia are among the largest non-European markets.
